Samsung Electro-Mechanics and SK Telecom are among the 30 South Korean companies recently included in the 2026 Dow Jones Best-in-Class (DJ BIC) World Index.
A key change this year makes this news particularly noteworthy. The index's annual rebalancing, which used to happen in December, now takes effect on May 1st. This means the inclusion is based on the most current sustainability data, reflecting performance right up to the end of March 2026.
Let's trace back the causes. First, the most immediate factor was the March 31st cutoff for the Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA) scores, which S&P Global uses to build the index. Just before this, S&P updated its scoring methodology, which could have shifted the relative rankings. Additionally, Korean regulators reaffirmed their commitment to expanding mandatory English disclosures, making it easier for global evaluators to assess Korean firms.
Looking back a bit further, to February 2026, we see foundational changes. The Korea Sustainability Standards Board (KSSB) established new disclosure standards (KSDS) based on global ISSB standards. This move signaled a structural improvement in the quality and comparability of local ESG data. At the same time, a broader market trend was at play: with global sustainable funds experiencing outflows, investors grew more selective, favoring 'best-in-class' companies, thus increasing the prestige of the DJ BIC index.
Even longer-term factors have been building this momentum for months. Late in 2025, Korea strengthened its Stewardship Code, pushing institutional investors to demand better ESG practices. The index itself was officially rebranded from the well-known DJSI to DJ BIC, sharpening its focus on selecting only the top performers. These domestic efforts were also spurred by global pressures like the EU's Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), which affects Korean companies in global supply chains.
So, this isn't just a one-time recognition for a few companies. It's a sign of a structural shift. The entire ecosystem of corporate sustainability disclosure in Korea is maturing. ESG reporting is no longer a niche activity; it has become a fundamental part of the infrastructure that investors use for due diligence.
