Market research firm TrendForce recently lowered its 2026 growth forecast for global server shipments, a move driven not by falling demand but by a critical supply chain bottleneck.
The explosive growth in AI is essentially "crowding out" the rest of the server market. Suppliers are dedicating their limited capacity—from manufacturing and materials to power and logistics—to building high-margin AI servers, leaving general-purpose servers waiting in line.
This shift is primarily fueled by a powerful profit motive. First, components for AI servers, such as HBM (High Bandwidth Memory) and advanced packaging services like CoWoS, command significantly higher prices and profit margins. Companies like TSMC and SK hynix are naturally prioritizing these lucrative orders, diverting resources away from the commodity components needed for standard servers.
Second, the industry is hitting hard physical limits. The technology required for AI, especially advanced chip packaging, is incredibly complex. Despite record-breaking investments to expand capacity, facilities are fully booked well into the future. This scarcity creates a ripple effect, extending lead times for everything from server CPUs to power supply units and optics.
Finally, there's a growing power constraint. AI data centers consume vast amounts of electricity, and in many regions, the power grid is struggling to keep up. This means large-scale AI projects with pre-approved power connections get built first, while smaller deployments and general server refreshes are often delayed, waiting for grid upgrades.
In essence, the downgrade in the overall server forecast reflects a fundamental reallocation of resources. The market can support much more growth, but the supply chain can only deliver so much. For 2026, it's clear that the needs of the AI boom are throttling the growth of the traditional server market.
