For some specific parts, the increase was as high as 8 to 10 times. Furthermore, the time it takes to get these components, known as the lead time, has stretched to over 20 weeks, a significant jump from the usual 10-12 weeks.
This isn't a random event; it's the result of a chain reaction driven by the AI boom. First, the groundwork was laid back in 2024 when industry leader Murata noted that a single AI server needs 5 to 10 times more MLCCs than a standard server. This huge demand multiplier meant that any growth in AI server production would put immense pressure on MLCC supply.
Second, major suppliers like Murata and Samsung Electro-Mechanics (SEMCO) signaled their intentions early in 2026. They explored price hikes for AI-grade capacitors and maintained high factory utilization rates (over 90%) without rushing into massive expansions. This cautious approach created a tight supply environment for the most advanced MLCCs.
Third, by spring 2026, the market had clearly split. Reports from firms like TrendForce described a "polarized" situation: high-end MLCCs for AI and automotive sectors were in short supply, while components for consumer electronics remained readily available. This was confirmed by SEMCO's official filings, which showed an 8.1% year-over-year price increase and 95% factory utilization, providing hard data on the tightening supply.
This all culminated in the June price explosion. The relentless demand from AI server manufacturers, who were prioritizing these high-spec components, collided with the disciplined and limited supply. It's important to understand this is a bottleneck in a specific niche, not a sign that all electronic components are becoming expensive. The market for general-purpose MLCCs remains relatively calm.
