Hanwha Aerospace has announced the start of full-scale production for its Redback infantry fighting vehicle in Australia, having completed a key facility ahead of schedule.
This all began with a major shift in Australia's defense policy. Through its 2023 Defence Strategic Review (DSR), the Australian government changed its approach from simply buying more weapons to making "what's needed, faster, and at home." Instead of acquiring 450 Redback vehicles, the order was reduced to 129, with a new top priority: building a 'sovereign industrial base' by producing them locally to enhance self-reliance. The early completion of this factory is the first tangible result of that policy goal becoming a reality.
Building on this policy foundation, Hanwha Aerospace has been taking steady steps. First, it gained local production experience through the K9 self-propelled howitzer contract (2021) and used that to build the Phase 1 factory in Geelong (2024). Second, it established a stable supply chain by partnering with local Australian companies like Penske for engines and EOS for remote weapon systems. These three key elements—policy, infrastructure, and supply chain—aligned perfectly to set the stage for mass production.
The most recent and decisive trigger was the successful rollout of the AS9 'Huntsman' howitzer from the very same factory. Just a few weeks ago, the first Australian-made howitzer was unveiled, proving the local production line was fully operational. This created strong confidence that the Redback line would also run smoothly, leading to the announcement of a faster-than-planned transition to mass production.
The market has responded positively to this strong execution. In the month leading up to the announcement, Hanwha Aerospace's stock price rose by over 30%, reflecting high expectations. However, its price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio remains below the industry average, suggesting this isn't just hype but a reflection of confidence in the company's ability to deliver on its orders and its growth potential.
