Hyundai Motor Group is set to announce a massive KRW 10 trillion investment in Korea's Saemangeum region, solidifying its future in AI and robotics.
This plan, expected to be formalized with a memorandum of understanding (MOU), includes a large-scale AI data center, a modern robot factory, and hydrogen facilities. It's a significant part of the Group's broader KRW 125.2 trillion domestic investment plan through 2030 and serves to balance its substantial commitments in the United States.
The timing of this announcement is no coincidence and stems from several converging factors.
First, it's a direct follow-through on the ambitious vision Hyundai unveiled at CES 2026. The company declared its goal to lead in 'physical AI'—AI embodied in robots—and to begin mass-producing humanoid robots by 2028. To achieve this, Hyundai needs immense computing power to train its AI models and dedicated factories to build the robots, which is exactly what the Saemangeum project provides.
Second, the company is in a strong financial position. After posting record revenues in 2025, Hyundai has the capital and has signaled it will front-load spending, creating the urgency to secure a site like Saemangeum. This investment also serves a political purpose, demonstrating a major commitment to its home base in Korea after announcing large-scale projects in the U.S.
Third, the external environment is becoming highly favorable. The South Korean government is actively promoting AI and clean energy, and crucial infrastructure is falling into place. A key example is the planned HVDC power grid for the region, which is essential for powering a hyperscale data center. Samsung's recent deal for a similar data center in Gumi provides a successful template for Hyundai to follow.
Investors have already reacted positively, with Hyundai's stock re-rating higher on the "physical AI" narrative since CES. However, the path isn't entirely clear. The project's success will depend on navigating potential bottlenecks, chief among them securing an agreement with its powerful labor union on the deployment of humanoid robots in its factories.
