LS ELECTRIC has started a pilot program with Volvo Group Korea to test a mobile Energy Storage System (ESS) charger for electric construction equipment.
This move directly tackles a major hurdle in making construction sites greener: how to charge heavy electric machinery where there's no reliable power grid. The solution is a container-sized battery, the mobile ESS, which can be brought directly to the site. This not only powers the machines but also replaces noisy, polluting diesel generators, reducing carbon emissions significantly.
The timing for this pilot is driven by a powerful alignment of factors. First, there's a strong demand pull from Volvo. The company is ramping up mass production of electric excavators, like the 23-ton EC230 Electric, at its Changwon plant and aims for 35% of its machine sales to be electric by 2030. To achieve this, Volvo needs a practical charging solution for its customers, and this mobile ESS is a perfect fit.
Second, there's a corresponding supplier push from LS ELECTRIC. The company has demonstrated its expertise in the ESS sector, securing massive orders in markets like Japan. This pilot is a natural next step to apply its proven technology to a new, high-potential market. LS ELECTRIC's solid financial performance and rising investor confidence provide the backing needed for such an expansion.
Finally, this collaboration is bolstered by policy tailwinds and shared values. The Korean government is encouraging the shift to green machinery by expanding subsidies for electric excavators. Furthermore, both LS ELECTRIC and Volvo are committed to RE100, a global initiative for 100% renewable electricity. This pilot extends their existing partnership in building a solar power facility at Volvo's Changwon plant, reinforcing their joint commitment to decarbonization from the factory floor to the construction site.
- ESS (Energy Storage System): A system that captures energy, stores it as electricity in batteries, and then provides that power when needed. Think of it as a very large, rechargeable power bank.
- RE100 (Renewable Energy 100%): A global corporate initiative where companies commit to sourcing 100% of their electricity from renewable sources by a set year.
- OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer): A company that produces parts or equipment that may be marketed by another manufacturer. In this case, Volvo is the OEM for the construction machinery.
