A key electronic materials supplier has signaled a significant price shift, confirming a trend that has been building for months. Taiwan's Nan Ya Plastics notified customers of a 15% price increase on all Copper Clad Laminate (CCL) and Prepreg (PP) products, effective March 16. This move crystallizes the intense pressure on the electronics supply chain from both cost and demand sides.
The price hike is rooted in a clear causal chain. First is the cost-push from raw materials. Copper prices on the London Metal Exchange (LME) have been robust, trading around $12,900 per ton. More structurally, the processing fees for copper concentrate (TC/RC) have fallen to near-zero levels, prompting Chinese smelters to agree on production cuts. This signals a tight supply of the raw metal itself, directly increasing the cost of copper foil, a primary component of CCLs. This is compounded by shortages and price hikes in other key materials. For instance, Japan's Nittobo raised prices for electronic-grade glass fiber by 20% in August 2025, and Mitsui Kinzoku announced a 12% hike for copper foil in March 2026.
Second is the powerful demand-pull from the artificial intelligence sector. Market research firm TrendForce projects that global AI server shipments will grow by over 28% in 2026. These high-performance servers require advanced PCBs and, by extension, high-spec CCLs that can handle high frequencies and heat. This surging demand gives CCL manufacturers significant pricing power, allowing them to pass on rising costs and even improve their profit margins.
This isn't a sudden event but an acceleration of an ongoing cycle. Nan Ya had already implemented an 8% increase in November 2025, followed by a 10% hike from competitor Kingboard in December. In early 2026, Japanese supplier Resonac announced a 30% increase for its core PCB materials. Nan Ya's latest 15% hike confirms that this pricing cycle is not only continuing but also intensifying, especially for the high-end products crucial for the AI revolution.
- CCL (Copper Clad Laminate): A base material for printed circuit boards (PCBs), consisting of a laminate sheet clad with copper foil on one or both sides.
- LME (London Metal Exchange): The world center for industrial metals trading, where global benchmark prices for materials like copper are set.
- TC/RC (Treatment and Refining Charges): Fees paid by mining companies to smelters to process copper concentrate into refined metal. A fall in TC/RC indicates a shortage of concentrate, leading to higher metal prices.
