NIO's family-focused sub-brand, Onvo, recently celebrated a major milestone, delivering its 50,000th L90 large electric SUV.
This achievement is particularly noteworthy because it comes at a time of intense competition in the Chinese electric vehicle market, often described as a "price war." While many competitors are slashing prices to attract buyers, NIO and its Onvo brand are taking a different path, focusing on technology and user experience to stand out.
So, how did the L90 reach this milestone so quickly? The strategy has several layers. First, the L90 had a very strong start since its launch in August 2025, quickly proving its appeal to families. Second, Onvo offered an innovative 'BaaS (Battery as a Service)' model. This allows customers to buy the car at a lower upfront cost and pay a monthly fee for the battery, which they can quickly swap at one of NIO's thousands of stations. This unique infrastructure, which recently logged its 100 millionth swap, creates a significant advantage that is hard for rivals to copy.
Instead of joining the race to the bottom on price, Onvo is now doubling down on technology to defend its position. The upcoming 2026 refresh of the L90 will feature a LiDAR sensor option. This move signals a strategic pivot to compete on advanced driver-assistance features, which are becoming a key selling point for consumers. While adding LiDAR increases the vehicle's cost by about RMB 10,000, it allows the brand to maintain its pricing power and appeal to tech-savvy buyers.
This strategy is supported by a solid financial foundation. NIO reported its first profitable quarter in late 2025, giving it the confidence and resources to invest in upgrades like LiDAR rather than being forced into aggressive discounting. This financial health, combined with its unique battery-swapping ecosystem, forms a protective "moat" around its business. By focusing on value, NIO is navigating the price war not by being the cheapest, but by aiming to be one of the best.
- LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging): A remote sensing method that uses pulsed laser light to measure distances. In cars, it helps create a 3D map of the surroundings for advanced driver-assistance systems.
- BaaS (Battery as a Service): A subscription model where customers purchase an EV without the battery and pay a monthly fee for battery usage and access to a swapping network.
- Price War: A situation where competing companies repeatedly lower prices to undercut one another and capture market share.
