RF Systems has been chosen to supply a key component for Korea's next-generation missile interceptor, the Cheongung-III (M-SAM Block-III).
While the initial contract is small, its strategic importance is significant. RF Systems will provide the missile's transmit-path assembly, a critical part that directly impacts the performance of the missile's seeker and radar. Being selected during the early development phase is a major win, as it positions the company for long-term involvement in mass production, export-related parts supply, and future upgrades once the system enters service around 2035.
This development sits at the intersection of two major trends. First is the modernization of Korea's layered air defense network. The Cheongung-III is a core part of this long-term national project, led by prime contractor LIG Defense & Aerospace (LIG D&A). Securing a spot in this supply chain means becoming an integral part of the nation's defense infrastructure.
Second, and perhaps more importantly, is the 'K-defense export super-cycle'. The predecessor, Cheongung-II, has achieved remarkable success abroad. It secured a massive deal with the UAE in 2022, followed by another large contract with Saudi Arabia in 2024. The system's value was further proven in March 2026, when it was reported to have successfully intercepted Iranian missiles and drones in the UAE. This combat validation has boosted its reputation, creating urgent demand for replenishment and strengthening the case for future systems like the Block-III.
LIG D&A's own strategy has amplified this opportunity. The company rebranded in early 2026 and is aggressively expanding its global footprint with new subsidiaries in the U.S. and plans for the UAE. It's actively building a wider network of specialized technology partners. This global push creates a clear path for smaller, highly skilled suppliers like RF Systems to be integrated not just into a domestic program, but into a global, export-focused supply chain. This transforms a small development contract into a ticket for potentially much larger, multi-market production runs in the future.
- M-SAM: Medium-range Surface-to-Air Missile. A missile system designed to intercept enemy aircraft and missiles at medium altitudes.
- Transmit-path assembly: A set of components in a radar or seeker that generates and sends out radio frequency (RF) signals to detect and track a target.
- Prime Contractor: The main company responsible for managing a major project and coordinating the work of all subcontractors.
