Rocket Lab has just announced its largest-ever launch agreement.
This is a $190 million deal to conduct 20 hypersonic test flights over four years for the U.S. Department of Defense. The contract solidifies the company's role as a key partner in America's push to advance hypersonic technology, a critical area of national security.
This major contract didn't happen overnight; it's the result of a series of well-executed steps that built confidence. First, Rocket Lab recently proved its reliability and rapid response capabilities. They successfully launched two HASTE missions within a few months, including the "That's Not A Knife" mission in February 2026. This launch validated the HASTE vehicle as a test platform for advanced systems like scramjets. This demonstrated track record gave the government the assurance it needed to commit to a long-term, multi-launch "block buy."
Furthermore, this deal is part of a larger Pentagon initiative called MACH-TB 2.0, a multi-billion dollar program designed to significantly increase the frequency of hypersonic flight tests. The U.S. government needs reliable and frequent testing to develop its hypersonic capabilities, and Rocket Lab's HASTE rocket, a modified version of its workhorse Electron rocket, fits this need perfectly.
The contract is also financially significant. Each HASTE flight is valued at about $9.50 million, a notable premium of over 20% compared to the average price of a standard Electron launch. This deal will add approximately $47.5 million in annual revenue and boost the company's already substantial order backlog by over 10%, providing a stable and predictable revenue stream for its launch services division.
In essence, this agreement is a strong vote of confidence in Rocket Lab's technology and execution. It transforms the company from a provider of one-off launches into a long-term, strategic partner for critical national security programs.
