Samsung Electronics has decided to stop taking new orders for some of its older mobile DRAM products, LPDDR4 and LPDDR4X.
This decision is deeply connected to the recent explosive growth in the AI market. As demand for high-performance memory like HBM (High Bandwidth Memory)—essential for AI servers and data centers—skyrockets, it's become critical to decide how to allocate limited semiconductor production capacity. From a business perspective, producing modern LPDDR5X or HBM on the same production line generates far more profit than making older LPDDR4. This significantly increases the opportunity cost of manufacturing legacy products.
Furthermore, the direction of technological advancement is also fueling this shift. The memory specifications required by downstream industries like smartphones, AI PCs, and automotive are rapidly increasing. The next-generation standard, LPDDR6, has already been announced, and most new devices are now shipping with LPDDR5X or better as a baseline. In this context, there's little strategic reason for manufacturers to stick with the outdated LPDDR4.
Ultimately, Samsung's decision can be seen as a natural step in line with these market trends. Indeed, several LPDDR4/4X products are now marked as 'Discontinued' on Samsung Semiconductor's official website, confirming that this move is official. This is more than just the end of one product line; it's a major signal that a generational shift in the memory market is now in full swing.
This change will directly impact manufacturers of low- to mid-range smartphones and IoT devices. They now face the challenge of sudden LPDDR4X supply shortages and price hikes. Consequently, they are left with difficult choices: absorb the higher costs of adopting the more expensive LPDDR5X, or make a tough compromise by downgrading product specs, such as reverting to 4GB of RAM.
[Glossary]
- LPDDR: Short for Low-Power Double Data Rate, it's a type of memory semiconductor used primarily in mobile devices like smartphones and tablets.
- EOL (End-of-Life): A term indicating that a product is being discontinued, meaning its production, sales, and support will officially cease.
- HBM (High Bandwidth Memory): A high-performance memory made by vertically stacking multiple DRAM chips to dramatically increase data processing speed. It is mainly used in AI accelerators and high-performance computing.
